Since our train leaves at 8am, we woke up at 6am so we would have enough time to get all of our stuff packed and get down to the train with plenty of time. After getting ready we walked down to Union Station in Denver and got some quick breakfast food.
We hopped on our train and got to our seats and the train started to take off for the mountains! We were pretty excited about today, as it would be our first day in the real meat of the trip, the Rocky Mountains. We knew to expect to spend most of the day in the viewing car, as it was supposed to be one of the best days of the whole trip as far as scenery goes.
After climbing up and into the mountains we went to grab a beer and hang out in the viewing car and marvel at the spectacular views. It was really beautiful.
As we got into the heavier snow, the train stopped for a quick break (about 10 minutes) so naturally, we decided it was time for a quick impromptu snowball fight. Conor won. Conor is also writing this part...
After getting back in the train, we moved to different seats so that we could watch the train following the Colorado River through the mountains.
After about 8 hours we arrived in Glenwood Springs, our home for the next 3 nights! Leaving the train, we walked over the Colorado River toward our hotel and as we looked down you could see huge chunks of ice floating down the river which should maybe have given us a hint of what was to come...
We got into our hotel, and they had upgraded us to a pretty sweet honeymoon suite with a fireplace yay!
After some relaxing time in our room we went out to the local brewpub, the Glenwood Springs Brew Pub, for some happy hour drinks where our bartender immediately recognized us from the train we had gotten off earlier that day. She was super nice and told us about moving out here to Glenwood Springs and how she was from Temecula back in California. After hanging out with her for a while, and drinking some pretty awesome Peanut Butter Pale Ale's, we decided to head down further into town.
After seeing a special fancy wine bar with a sign (half off all wine's on Tuesday's, how could we resist), we got some sweet half price wine AND a super amazing cheese plate and proceeded to watch every single member of an individual family get up and sing Les Mis with the bar's pianist.
All in all we had a great time!
